Red Panda

Red Panda

The red panda is Veirling’s jewel.  With an everage weight of about 12 pounds, these critters are more like racoons then panda bears.  In fact, the word panda means eater of bamboo and was created after the discover of the red panda, and only later was the name panda given to the panda bears that we think of when we hear the word. Red pandas are very rare, but not as rare as the strict laws protecting them would leave you to believe.  There are still approximately 2,500 red pandas alive today, but due to their “stealthy” ways of life many researchers believe there are still many red panda populations that have not been accounted for.  However, due to poaching and habitat loss their numbers are on a downward spiral, which is why we need to get one (or maybe a few) quick before its too late.  Red pandas are native to the Himalayas in China but big news came in 2010.  In August 2010, archaeologists uncovered red panda fossil remains in Tennessee. That’s right, millions of years ago red pandas used to live, and possibly rule the United States.  Although there is not scientific evidence, I’m assuming that terrorist killed all red pandas living in America.  That is why it is up to us to bring these adorable creatures animals back to the land of the free.
